Due to expected increases in evening engineering work by Network Rail on the Liverpool St. route during 2009, a number of the Barking – Liverpool St. evening shuttles will have to be cancelled; and as these are the now the only workings now available for drivers to gain and maintain route knowledge, it will be necessary to fulfil this need by other means.

Train operators, wary of the fiascos of Rugby and Liverpool Street, are second-guessing all the time. For example, it was c2c that pulled the plug on an Easter possession at Grays to lengthen the turnback siding (sic) [i.e. the bay platform!] there to 8 cars. with only 3 or 4 weeks to go to the blockade, the operator was unimpressed by NR's contingency plans and demanded the job be put off.

Update 09/03/2008 c2c have just announced that they are to defer the improvements outlined below until December 2008. The changes to the timetable were wholly dependant on Network Rail being able to complete the extension to Grays platform 3 by the start of the proposed timetable in May. However, following a review, c2c judged Network Rails plans to be too ambitious for delivery within that timescale. Whilst we are disappointed that Thurrock Commuters must wait longer for long overdue improvements to services, we are pleased that c2c have been upfront about the delays and given plenty of notice of the deferal.
